They wanted to make a System that was usuable by children ages 6 or younger so they too could play Pokemon X and Y along with the rest of us.

Though I've already seen kids of that age carrying 3DSXLs.

Taking out the 3D isn't such a bad idea, they probably figured not many people are using it at all.   Now if only the design team weren't so crap at their jobs.  They might of pulled off something decent here.

They already appeal to kids, 3d slider takes care of that, the form factor is a step back, and looks like a chore to take it with you now.

Unless you want something like:
3Dless 3DS, or
3DS - No 3D

These names are terrible.

I can't think of anything suitable personally.

I know "2DS" isn't the best name and can be confusing, but I think it might be the best givent the circumstance. It might at least get bundled in with the namaing "style" of the 3DS, which might lead consumers (or at least retail outlets) to get the point across that it's compatable with "that other system with a similar name (the 3DS)".

I just realized that this is Nintendo's 3rd version of the 3DS and THERE'S STILL NO SECOND JOYSTICK EVEN AFTER PRODUCING 2 ADDONS FOR IT!
